For my scriptwriting course, I undertook a PSA (Public Service Announcement) assignment focusing on Autism Speaks. This organization provided an ideal platform for me to convey a message highlighting that individuals on the autism spectrum are more than their diagnosis. Through this PSA, I aimed to emphasize that many individuals on the spectrum can excel in various positions despite the challenges posed by the condition. Drawing from my own perspective as someone with Asperger's, which is on the autistic spectrum, I infused personal insight into the script, aiming to foster understanding and appreciation for the capabilities of individuals with autism.
Side Note: Autism Speaks is a controversial organization within the autistic community. As the concept and awareness of neurodiversity have continued to develop, so too has public understanding and perception of autism. From my understanding, Autism Speaks has been working to improve itself as these perspectives evolve. I was not fully aware of these issues at the time of the assignment. As an autistic person, I recognize the concerns many in my community have with the organization; however, I believe the project itself remains a strong and empowering piece of work, so I have chosen to keep it in my portfolio.
