PERSONAL RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests are centered on audience research, where I explore viewing habits and preferences and delve into the passionate fandoms that emerge from these audiences. I'm particularly intrigued by how these fandoms interact with intellectual properties (IPs), the media content surrounding them, and their associated merchandise. Moreover, I'm fascinated by how individual fans and entire communities use technology to express their dedication to their favorite IPs by creating and sharing content.
The media I study often originates from the Northeast Asia region, including China, Japan, and Korea. In this academic field, I have explored these countries' social and cultural aspects, especially in relation to the diverse media they produce and the prevalent pop cultures interwoven with it. I discuss phenomena such as Japanese Otaku culture, which encompasses Anime, Manga, Light Novels, Visual Novels, Video Games, and J-pop. Additionally, I'm well-versed in Hallyu (Korean Wave) culture, which includes Korean dramas and K-pop, as well as Chinese pop culture featuring Manhua, Chinese dramas, Chinese animation, and martial arts films. My understanding also extends to the operations of major media conglomerates in these regions, such as Sony, Bandai Namco Holdings Inc., and Taeyoung. This extensive exploration of the media landscapes in Northeast Asia provides me with a comprehensive understanding of how global media influences and shapes fan communities and their engagement with IPs.
